Picture Book Evaluation

Are your words and your illustrations working together? Do the page turns generate suspense and move the story along? I’ll read your story (quietly and out loud), evaluating its themes, narrative flow, read-aloud potential, and whether or not it’s right for young readers.

Here's What Happens

  • I’ll read through your picture book draft at least twice, leaving comments where lines or characters stand out, where I may be confused, if pacing/page turns feel off or solid, etc. I’ll also take notes on what I think is working and what’s not.
  • Feedback will be delivered in a 4–5 page report with high-level impressions of the plot, pacing, themes, and age considerations, and how I feel the text and illustrations work together if illustrations or illustration descriptions have been provided (recommended).

Common Questions About This Service

Why do I need a picture book evaluation?

You don’t. No one is required to get professional feedback.

However, writing an illustrated book comes with considerations that we don’t often think about when writing a novel or short story—the words and the illustrations need to work in harmony.

In addition, picture books must be age-appropriate in themes, language, etc.—and not just, “Sure, it’s for kids,” but, “Does this appeal more to younger picture book readers or older picture book readers?”

For those who are unfamiliar with this style of writing (and even those who are!) or who need a second set of eyes on their work, picture book evaluations can be of great value.

How soon can you complete the evaluation?

Once a contract has been signed and payment received, I can typically finish a Picture Book Evaluation within 1–2 weeks. (Though I always add extra time to this estimate as a buffer in case of illness or emergency.)

The only reason I might not meet this turnaround is if the project comes to me around the holidays or some other planned time off. If that’s the case, I’ll be clear about when I can officially start, and the turnaround estimate would start from that date.

Do I have to include illustrations with my manuscript?

Not at all. Not everyone is an illustrator, and that’s OK.

I do, however, recommend that if you don’t have illustrations to share, you include brief descriptions of what you envision the illustrations to be for each page or spread. (Here’s a great example of a picture book manuscript formatted with illustration descriptions.)

Can you evaluate my graphic novel or other illustrated (non-picture) book?

This evaluation is specifically for children’s picture books. I do not work with graphic novels (yet—I would love to learn to work with them!), and different rates would apply to other types of illustrated books (such as children’s chapter books).

For chapter books or other non-PB kidlit, I recommend checking out my developmental editing or skilled beta reading services, or reaching out if you are looking for something a little different.

What do you need to know about me and my work?

I approach manuscripts from a point of curiosity and problem-solving. When you hit that contact button, help me get a sense of what we’ll be doing together by including:

  • Working manuscript title

  • Genre/Theme

  • A brief (1-2 sentence) synopsis

  • Word count (keeping in mind that picture books are best around 500 words and should be no more than 1,000)

  • Are there specific worries or questions you are hoping to address?

  • How do you best receive feedback? Do you prefer light and breezy, cutthroat, honest, a back and forth discussion, etc.

What happens after I reach out?
  1. We’ll connect and I’ll send you a link to schedule an intro call (if you want!). We’ll get to know one another and discuss your project.
  2. If you think you may want to move forward, I’ll provide you with a quote, an estimated time to complete, and tentative delivery date.
  3. You review my proposal and realize that I can help take your work to the next level.
  4. You say, “Let’s do this,” sign the contract I send you, and pay for the evaluation. Then it’s all on me to dive into your fictional world and get to work!
I just need to think out loud or run ideas by someone. Can we talk?

Sure! I offer a complimentary 15-minute intro call for all new clients to discuss services and needs. For deeper conversations, you can book a 30-, 45-, or 60-minute craft chat to ask questions, brainstorm, and talk through ideas.

How do payments work?

For Picture Book Evaluations, I require the full amount upfront to secure space in my schedule.

Preferred payment methods: Zelle (U.S.) or Wise (International). Alternative methods available upon request.

If I work with you, will I get published?

There is a lot more to getting published than putting words to the page. Editing is one step. Marketing is another. But there are factors in between that are entirely up to you and the industry. I can tell you that I’ll provide you with expert feedback and guidance based on my subjective experience and expertise, all intended toward perfecting your writing.
